I’m willing to overlook that though because the author’s commitment to the downward spiral kept me on the edge of my seat. I’m okay with some suspension of disbelief but this felt so unnecessary and threw off the story for me. There are a couple of things that happen that seem so unrealistic – for example (not really a spoiler), Florence just so happens to run into a childhood friend in Morocco who is also conveniently dating her ex-boyfriend. Basically, Florence and Helen are both completely unlikeable but the characters together create a fascinating dynamic.
This book started slow it takes some time to set up Florence’s motivations, intentions, and drive home the point that she dreams of fame but lacks any ambition to put in the effort unless it involves screwing over someone else who can just give her what she wants. To become the celebrated author Maud Dixon …and have her own words published. It would be so easy for Florence to step in and take Helen’s place …her bank account. The world has no idea who Helen Wilcox is …or Maud Dixon. With excitement and a certain amount of relief, Florence accompanies Helen to Morocco, the setting of the work in progress, for Helen to gain inspiration and Florence to perform some research.īut then Florence wakes up in a hospital, her passport missing, Helen nowhere to be found, and the local police are calling Florence “Ms. Florence is the only person who has laid eyes on this new novel and she’s surprised to find it is nowhere near the caliber as Helen’s first.
Florence will type up Helen’s longhand pages, keep her editor up to date, as well as respond to all emails and pay her bills – all so Helen can focus on a highly anticipated follow-up. Now it’s time for “Maud” to get back to work. After signing an iron-clad non-disclosure agreement, Florence learns Maud Dixon is the pseudonym for Helen Wilcox, a woman living in seclusion outside the city and still riding the high of her successful debut novel.
Some questionable choices lead to an incredible opportunity to become assistant to the author known as Maud Dixon. Problem is, she hasn’t written a single word in years and she’s stuck in an entry level position at a publishing house. Twenty-six-year-old Florence Darrow left behind her hometown in Florida full of what she considered small minds to become a celebrated writer in New York City.
